Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Kolkata (IPMER, Kolkata) is a national research institute in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The institute was founded in 1957. Currently, the institute is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences in Kolkata.
Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) was established with the mission of providing postgraduate training in clinical disciplines. On January 16, 1957, the institute was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s then-Prime Minister. Since then, January 16 has been designated as the institute’s Foundation Day.
It is located in the heart of Kolkata, near the Race Course Ground and the Victoria Memorial Hall, and is surrounded by cultural and historical landmarks such as the Nandan complex, Rabindra Sadan, Academy of Fine Arts, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, the Red Road, and the Indian Museum. It faces Kolkata’s Maidan, a popular location for political rallies in the city.
The location contributed to the two institutes’ collaborative teaching and research culture. For a long time, IPGME&R was primarily a superspecialty referral hospital and postgraduate medical institute. Over time, new landmark sections were added, such as the Respiratory Care Unit, the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, the Institute of Psychiatry (pre-independence India already had a mental hospital), and the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.
On the same campus, but under separate administration, a nursing school and a nursing college were established. Toward the end of the millennium, efforts were made to begin undergraduate (MBBS) training at the institute. These efforts bore fruit, and on August 1, 2004, the Medical Council of India formally approved the undergraduate section of IPGME&R to begin operations with 100 MBBS seats.

Hospital of Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Kolkata
In 1707, the first hospital in Calcutta was established on the grounds of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The Fort William Council built this hospital. Originally built for Europeans until 1770, this hospital was then known as the Presidency Hospital, after the Presidency of Calcutta and due to its proximity to the Presidency Jail of Calcutta.
The hospital was given a new name in 1954, Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital, in honour of one of the prominent members of the Marwari community who generously donated to the hospital’s urgently needed expansion. Although the hospital is still known as a PG hospital to the vast majority of Kolkata residents, the name SSKM Hospital began to be used in official circles.
P.G. Hospital was the first Post Graduate Medical Institute in Eastern India in 1957, when it was renamed The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER). On January 16, 1957, it was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, India’s then Prime Minister.
The hospital and institute both celebrated their Golden Jubilees in 2007 as well as their tercentenaries. Today, new clinical sections and research labs are being added to the hospital and institute that work together.
To redistribute the growing patient load, plans exist to merge additional hospitals and relocate sections to different locations.
A brand-new academic building is being built. Despite all of this activity, the IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital’s mission and vision remain the same, and they are to serve as a referral hospital and institute for all of Bengal and Eastern India.
Give qualified aspirants access to basic medical education with the intention of creating capable, self-assured, and moral doctors receptive to community and national needs.
Give training to qualified candidates in paramedical fields so they can work to the highest standards in collaboration with doctors to relieve discomfort and suffering.
Create an integrated structure for postgraduate education across all areas of medicine. Provide medical professionals and service personnel with refresher courses.
Encourage research on basic and applied medical issues, and instruct recent graduates and postdocs in the principles and practices of conducting research.
Encourage the coordinated growth of various medical specialities and provide resources for advanced training that is both practical and theoretical.
Placements
After MBBS, they can pursue PG degrees like an MD or MS, a DNB diploma, etc. Candidates can also choose non-clinical options like instructing undergraduate students. Being a doctor requires a lot of courage, but it’s worthwhile.
About 75% of students apply for admission to this college. Students who complete internships often land a good job in one of many renowned hospitals. They are devoted to providing patients with high-tech medical tools and their shrewd expertise.
Since IPGMER is a medical school, their placement is self – reliant of all authorities. They work for own-selves.
