Lady Hardinge Medical College New Delhi for Women was established in 1914 to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Mary’s visit in 1911-12. Lady Hardinge, the then-wife of Viceroy’s, was the first to take the initiative to establish a medical college for women, as the lack of a separate medical college for women made it nearly impossible for Indian women to study medicine.
Lady Hardinge laid the foundation stone for this institution on March 17, 1914. Unfortunately, this great lady died later that year, and on Queen Mary’s suggestion, the college and hospital were named after Lady Hardinge to honour its founder.
On February 17, 1916, Lord Hardinge, the then-Viceroy of India, formally opened the college and hospital. The countess of Dufferin Fund Council maintained a close relationship for many years, and senior teaching staff almost entirely consisted of its members until India gained independence.
To comply with the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Act 2006, LHMC increased undergraduate admissions.
The college has been affiliated with the University of Delhi since 1950. Postgraduate courses were first offered in 1954 in collaboration with Punjab University, and then in 1956 in collaboration with the University of Delhi. Initially, only female postgraduate students were admitted, but male and female students have been enrolled in various postgraduate courses since 1970.
