GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, (Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial) known for its academic excellence around the world, is named after Late Shri Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, a great freedom fighter who died on the altar of communal vigour in Kanpur in March 1931.
This college was founded in November 1955, and the foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, on April 24, 1956. The first Principal of this college was Dr. S.N. Mathur.
This was the first medical college in Uttar Pradesh to be established in independent India, marking a watershed moment in the history of medical education in the state. It is one of five medical colleges established in India under the second five-year plan.
GSVM Medical College is located in Kanpur’s historic and industrial district. Kanpur is embraced by our most sacred river, the Ganga, on two sides: north-west (Kalyanpur) and north-east (Jajmau). Kanpur is now well-known for its industrial organisations and educational institutions. This city is Uttar Pradesh’s economic capital.
This medical college has a large campus with hospital and college sections housed in separate buildings. The main college building resembles a massive palace and is the largest of all medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. The main hospital (L.L.R Hospital) and its sister units, which include the Chest Hospital, Infectious Disease Hospital, Children Hospital, Maternity Hospital, Cancer Institute, and Cardiology Institute, form Asia’s largest patient care centre.
G.S.V.M. Medical College in Kanpur has a group of alumni called GEMS Association International. In 1960, the first group of graduates included both undergraduate and graduate students. An “Old Boys” association was established at this point. But it wasn’t until 1972 that the association really got going.
