GSVM Medical College, Kanpur

GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, (Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial) known for its academic excellence around the world, is named after Late Shri Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, a great freedom fighter who died on the altar of communal vigour in Kanpur in March 1931.

This college was founded in November 1955, and the foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, on April 24, 1956. The first Principal of this college was Dr. S.N. Mathur.

This was the first medical college in Uttar Pradesh to be established in independent India, marking a watershed moment in the history of medical education in the state. It is one of five medical colleges established in India under the second five-year plan.

GSVM Medical College is located in Kanpur’s historic and industrial district. Kanpur is embraced by our most sacred river, the Ganga, on two sides: north-west (Kalyanpur) and north-east (Jajmau). Kanpur is now well-known for its industrial organisations and educational institutions. This city is Uttar Pradesh’s economic capital.

This medical college has a large campus with hospital and college sections housed in separate buildings. The main college building resembles a massive palace and is the largest of all medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. The main hospital (L.L.R Hospital) and its sister units, which include the Chest Hospital, Infectious Disease Hospital, Children Hospital, Maternity Hospital, Cancer Institute, and Cardiology Institute, form Asia’s largest patient care centre.

G.S.V.M. Medical College in Kanpur has a group of alumni called GEMS Association International. In 1960, the first group of graduates included both undergraduate and graduate students. An “Old Boys” association was established at this point. But it wasn’t until 1972 that the association really got going.

Hospital of GSVM Medical College, Kanpur

L.L.R. and Associated Hospitals are the hospitals affiliated with the GSVM Medical College. The hospital campus encompasses a large area. Previously, the main Lala Lajpat Rai hospital was known as “Hallet Hospital.” On August 7, 1943, ‘Sir’ Maurice Garnier Hallet, Governor of the United Provinces, laid the foundation stone for this hospital.

L.L.R. Hospital was founded in 1943, with a total of 709 officers and employees.

On December 16, 1944, Field-Marshall Viscount Wavell of Cyrenaica and Winchester, Viceroy and Governor General of India, opened it.

Following India’s independence, its name was changed by the government of Uttar Pradesh and was frequently named after the great freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai. L.L.R. hospital’s main building houses departments of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, E.N.T, Skin and V. D., Radio diagnosis, O.P.D., Mortuary, Casualty, Emergency I.C.U., and Medicine I.C.U.

A good college in terms of infrastructure and teachers, with average hostels. Because this is a medical college, placements do not play a role in this programme (MBBS). Applicants must appear for post-graduation; the results of this college in this regard are quite good.

The MBBS college has recruitment policies in place. After graduation, they must pass the NEET-PG, and based on their results. All students must complete a mandatory rotary internship before applying to various hospitals. Students can choose to work in private practice or pursue post-graduate studies and further super specialisation. Everything is up to the students.
