Hospital of Grant Medical College, Mumbai

The medical college is located on the campus of Sir J. J. Hospital in Byculla. The hospital has 2844 beds and sees 1,200,000 out-patients and 80,000 in-patients per year from all over Maharashtra and central India.

The campus is the largest among Mumbai’s medical colleges. It covers 44 acres (180,000 m2) in the South Mumbai neighbourhood of Byculla. In an otherwise congested part of the city, the campus stands out for its greenery and open spaces.

The campus has a mix of buildings depicting both modern Indian and Colonial architecture, with gradual additions and expansions since its initial foundation. As the campus grew, it absorbed hospitals that had previously been independent before being absorbed into J.J. Hospital and thus retained some of their older names, most notably C.J. Ophthalmic Hospital, B.J. Hospital for Children, and the David Sasoon Hospital.

There are 45 wards, 5 hostels, and 7 canteens on campus. It also provides housing for its teaching faculty, resident doctors, medical students, nurses, and other hospital employees.

Grant Medical College’s anatomy hall was featured as the central lecture hall in the fictional medical school attended by the lead character in the film Munnabhai M.B.B.S. Aside from the main campus in Byculla, it also has a sea-facing gymkhana on Marine Drive in south Mumbai.

Recently, the Richardson Cruddas building was added to the JJ hospital campus for research purposes.

The college has excellent placements. All of the seniors who completed the course are now in excellent positions. The placements are upto 100%. Every student completes their internship successfully. The college provides a good setting for PG exams. The pass rate for PG exams is high.

Student can also work in one of Mumbai’s top hospitals. The batch strength is 250. After graduation, they can work as a medical officer or start their own clinical work, or can do postgraduate work.
