Burdwan Medical College Burdwan is a Government Medical College run by the West Bengal government. Burdwan Medical College was founded in 1969 as ‘Burdwan University Medical College’ by the University of Burdwan. It started small, in a hollow brick building (Primary school). The Honourable Health Minister at the time, Late Nani Bhattacharyaa, laid the groundwork. On 4 August 1976, it was taken over by the Government of West Bengal and renamed Burdwan Medical College. However, until 2003, the College was the sole Medical College under the academic jurisdiction of Burdwan University. It was then taken over by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.
The Medical College is currently spread across 51 acres of land. Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan offers para-medical courses such as physiotherapy, nursing, and DMLT in addition to MBBS and medical postgraduate degrees.
The College grew steadily into an academic hub, and the annual intake of MBBS students was increased to 100 in 2000. Since 2013, the Medical Council of India has allowed the College to admit 150 MBBS students per year. Aside from medical graduates, the Institution currently serves as a knowledge hub for nearly 100 postgraduates, including super-specialties, per batch.
They wish to establish a teaching and learning environment in which students can develop their own learning styles and abilities to use academic resources while also reflecting on their experiences. They want to provide a nationally and internationally recognised medical education that produces excellent doctors with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to healthcare challenges and transform patient care.

Hospital of Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan
It was at a convention in the small town of Burdwan on July 13, 1907, that the decision was made to build a hospital in the town. In this regard, the Frazer Hospital opened on November 9, 1910, with 127 indoor beds.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, agreed to the proposal to establish a Medical College in Burdwan.
Burdwan residents remember and thank visionaries such as District Board Chairperson Jitendtranath Mitra, Maharajkumar Abhaychand, Dr. Narottam Samanta, Dr. Sailendranath Mukhopadhyay, and Dr. Sailendranath Bhattacharya for the development of Burdwan’s medical infrastructure.
The Frazer Hospital was renamed Bijoy Chand Hospital or ‘BC Hospital,’ after Burdwan’s Maharajadhiraj, Bijoy Chand Mahtab. It served as Burdwan’s district hospital until it was merged with Burdwan Medical College and renamed the Burdwan Medical College Hospital. The ‘grand’ century-old red-colored building of the BC Hospital is still a part of the current hospital and inspires respect in the minds of both doctors and the general public.
When it was converted into a teaching hospital, 759 beds were initially approved. It gradually increased to the current number of sanctioned beds of 1099. The administration is concerned about the growing need of the people, and further development and establishment of newer units, as well as further expansion work, is still underway.
