The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced new regulations aimed at improving attendance and quality control in medical colleges across India. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:
- Mandatory Attendance: A minimum 75% attendance is now compulsory for both teachers and students in all medical colleges, including SKMCH.
- Biometric Attendance System: To ensure compliance, colleges will be required to implement Aadhaar-based biometric machines for recording faculty attendance.
- Examination Recordings: Videos of graduation and postgraduate (PG) examinations will need to be submitted to the NMC.
- Streamlined Inspections: Regular college inspections will be replaced by a verification system. College principals will be responsible for verifying documents and uploading them to a new NMC portal (under development).
- Electronic Logbooks for PG Students: PG students will maintain electronic logbooks to record daily work details, requiring verification by their guides.
- Revised Passing Criteria: The NMC has revised the passing criteria for theory and practical examinations. Now, students can pass even if they score 40 marks in one subject and 60 marks in another, provided the total score meets the passing threshold.
- Performance-Based Seat Allocation: Colleges with weak educational systems may face a reduction in allotted MBBS/MD seats.
Additional Notes:
- The announcement comes after an online meeting held by the NMC with principals of all medical colleges on March 12, 2024.
- This initiative aims to address issues like absentee faculty and ensure consistent student engagement in medical education.
- The new regulations are expected to enhance the quality of medical graduates in India.
