Government Medical College in Andaman and Nicobar

Government Medical College in Andaman & Nicobar provides comprehensive medical education and training programs to meet the region’s healthcare needs. Aspiring doctors in Andaman and Nicobar have only one option to pursue an MBBS degree from a government college: the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) that is located in Port Blair. Established in 2015, ANIIMS offers a five-and-a-half-year MBBS program with a yearly admission of 114 students to meet the island territory’s healthcare needs.

Admission to ANIIMS is through the national NEET-UG exam, providing a based on merit selection procedure. The institute has cutting-edge facilities, including well equipped laboratories, a specialized library, and a 500-bed affiliated hospital for clinical training. Students benefit from experienced professors, who provide a holistic learning environment.

While the presence of only one government MBBS College indicates a potential gap in healthcare education, ANIIMS serves a significant part in developing future medical professionals in the region. Its graduates make important contributions to the medical workforce, working in hospitals, clinics, and public health projects throughout the islands. The institute also actively participates in community outreach projects that raise health awareness and provide primary healthcare access.
