National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a warning to medical colleges, stating that they cannot impose monetary penalties, reduce seats, or compel students to stay in hostels.
Under the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations Act (PGMER) 2023, it is mandatory for colleges to provide proper accommodation for students, but it is not mandatory for PG students to be compelled to stay in hostels, clarified the NMC.

It has been reported that students complained that medical colleges not only forced them to stay but also charged hefty fees. The NMC stated that it has received several complaints from PG students alleging exorbitant charges by medical colleges. This violates Regulation 5.6 of PGMER 2023.
The commission has directed all medical colleges and institutions to adhere to these rules, warning of action against those who fail to comply with the regulations. The NMC emphasized that all medical colleges and institutions are directed to comply with the above regulations, and failure to do so may result in action under Regulations 9.1 and 9.2 of PGMER 2023, which include monetary fines, reduction in seats, and even suspension of admissions.
